Formby Golf Club

Founded in 1884, is a magnificent traditional links of charm and elegance situated close by the shoreline of the Irish sea, near Southport.

Bernard Darwin sang the praises of Formby in his 1910 book "The Golf Courses of the British Isles" and, whilst the course has changed from that he played, his words still ring true. "... we finish with a good two shot hole on to a fine big green in front of a fine big club-house. The greens are beautifully green; they are likewise very true and keen enough, without ever being bare and hard. The lies, too, are excellent, and it is altogether one of those courses where the player's fate is entirely in his own hands. If he plays well everything will conspire to help him on his way, but he has got to play really well - good, sterling, honest golf: there is no mistake about that at Formby."

Ben Wright in his description of Formby in the Official Programme for the 1967 Amateur Championship, a copy of which hangs in the Golfers' Bar, refers to Formby as "...a magnificent golf course ..." and goes on to say "Formby is unique amongst all our great seaside courses in that it is blessed with such a profusion of pine trees, whose smell is so delicious, and whose presence does so much to soften and beautify the landscape." and "Developments to the course were made as and when required by continually improved playing methods and equipment, but thankfully successive Green Committees at Formby have never allowed their ideas to run away with their judgement, and influence them to spoil the natural features of the original layout." Ben Wright goes on to describe the course hole by hole.

Formby Ladies

Formby Ladies Golf Club, Pine trees and sand dunes

The club is a successful example of a ladies club possessing its own 18 hole course. Founded in 1896, Formby Ladies is a charming links course situated between Southport and Liverpool and close to the shoreline of the Irish Sea. Set amongst pine trees and sand dunes, it lies in the center area of the property owned by Formby Golf Club. No less a golfing figure than Greg Norman had this to say. "Over 100 years old and still your course can stand the test of time. What a beautiful course. It clearly shows that courses do not have to be 7,000 yards plus to be formidable." Visitors are most welcome and we would like to make it clear that men are most welcome to play the course.

Hesketh

Set amidst the towering Victorian villas of Southport's premier residential area - Hesketh Park - is The Hesketh Golf Club, the town's oldest golf club, founded in 1885. Standing alone on the crest of a tall sandhill, the clubhouse dominates the golf course, and the surrounding district. The course is at the northern end of south-west Lancashire`s sand dune system, which is the home of so many great golf courses. Professional championship golf has been played on these famous old links from the club`s earliest days, and the course is regularly used as a final qualifying course when The Open is played at Royal Birkdale. The course sets a unique challenge with half of the holes threaded through tall sand dunes; whilst the other holes border the Ribble estuary. Here the course`s neighbour is a nationally renowned bird reserve, where winter visitors are rewarded by seeing great flocks of migrant geese, swans and waders. Across the estuary the mountains of Lancashire, Cumbria and Yorkshire provide an unforgettable backdrop.

Hillside

Hillside Golf Club

Hillside Golf Club is situated in Southport, 'England's Golfing Capital'. The course forms part of England's finest stretch of coastal links being adjacent to Royal Birkdale and Southport & Ainsdale with Formby Golf Course a few miles down the road.

From the white tees the course at Hillside measures over 6,800 yards meandering through majestic sandhills and tranquil pinewoods. Many of the holes have elevated tees with fantastic views over the Irish Sea.

After playing the course, Greg Norman wrote to the Club saying that "The back nine were the best in Britain", while Jack Nicklaus described the course as "A wild looking links". A round of golf at Hillside is a truly memorable experience and many visitors consider the course equal to anything the Open Championship venues have to offer. To sample links golf at its finest, ensure Hillside is on your schedule.

Royal Birkdale

One of Britain's finest golf clubs and host to two Ryder Cups, the Walker and Curtis Cups, the Women's British Open and the Open Championship on eight occasions. Host to the 2008 Open Championship. Royal Birkdale has been voted the No 1 course in Britain, and is among the best in the world.

In 1961 came Arnold Palmer, and with him undoubtedly the renaissance of the Open Championship as a truley international event. Fierce gales and storms led to the cancellation of Friday's last two rounds and a directive from the R&A that the Championship would have to be completed on Saturday. Palmer's play in the gale in the second roundwas considered his best and the plaque on the 16th fairway was erected to commemorate an awesome second shot played directly into the teeth of the wind.

Royal Liverpool

The Hoylake links can be, by turns, beautiful, uplifting, awe inspiring and, on occasion, soul-destroying. They were created to be a demanding test of golf and remain so, and they lie at the very heart of the history and development of golf in Great Britain. In July 2006 the fabled mighty winds did not blow. But there was no denying that another mighty champion was born...in the shape of one Eldrick "Tiger" Woods.

Royal Lytham & St Annes

Royal Lytham & St Annes Golf Club was founded in 1886 and the present Course constructed in 1897. The Clubhouse celebrated its Centenary in 1998. It is one of the premier links courses in the world, host to ten Open Championships, two Ryder Cups and numerous other major tournaments including the Women's and Seniors Open Championships. Northern hospitality has always been famous and Royal Lytham leads the way. You will be made very welcome.

Lytham pays homage to the game of golf and to the greatest Championship in the world. From Seve's signed scorecard to Bobby Jones's priceless portrait hanging in the Club Room, the place is not only a living, breathing museum but it is also a world-class sporting venue.

Established in 1886, Royal Lytham has held ten British Opens and two Ryder Cups.

Lytham also hosted the first Ladies' Amateur Championship, back in 1893, and opened its gates again to the Centenary event in 1993. Venue of the Curtis Cup, and of three Weetabix Ladies' British Opens which it will host again in 2009, Lytham today extends a big welcome to lady players of all standards.

Southport & Ainsdale

S&A Golf links

Southport & Ainsdale Golf Club is a true championship links course, with first class facilities to match. The course is set amongst the dunes on the North West coastline and is another of course designer, James Braid's great creations.

S&A (as it is widely and affectionately known), was founded in 1906, part of the great golf boom around the turn of the 20th century. Inevitably the passing of so many years has brought about changes to the course, but the traditional feel of a championship links has been retained.

The club has hosted two Ryder Cup matches in 1933 and 1937 and a number of other prestigious championships including The British Ladies Open and The British Amateur. It remains a final qualifying course for The Open Championship and it has been voted by one golf magazine as among the top 50 courses in Great Britain.

All the holes are of championship standard and no two are the same. However, if one had to be singled out it would, be the sixteenth. This famous hole has a great hill and bunkers, lined with railway sleepers and is a cunning trap, catching poor second shots. It is called "Gumbleys", after the gentleman who spent some time in there!
